Tamil Nadus Open Source initiaive in education

Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited (ELCOT) is a wholly owned Government of Tamil Nadu Undertaking. It serves as a nodal agency for its Information and Communication Technology projects. One of its primary areas of focus has been to promote Open Source Software. Its most recent FOSS initiative was to use Novell's Suse Linux and Open Office instead of Microsoft's windows. One of the main targets chosen for the deployment of Linux systems were the schools across the state who for this very reason were equipped with 20,000 desktop computers. According to ELCOTs higher officials this shift to open source will not only reduce the risk of viruses but will also slash the local government's IT cost by 15 to 25 percent.
